Olajumoke Adenowo – The Biography Of Nigeria’s Finest Female Architect

Olajumoke Adenowo

Olajumoke Adenowo (Olajumoke Olufunmilola Adenowo) is one of the richest architects in Nigeria. She is a speaker, author, philanthropist, and entrepreneur. She is a successful architect (featured by the world’s foremost Architectural Journal, Architectural Record) and a force in her profession, an industry dominated by men. Olajumoke Adenowo uses her radio show ‘Voice Of Change’ to teach youths how to ask the right questions from their leaders and hold them accountable. She has authored many books and gives back to society through her faith-based NGO; Awesome Treasures Foundation.

Olajumoke Adenowo Background

Olajumoke Adenowo was born on the 16th of October, 1968 in Ibadan, Oyo State. She grew up in Obafemi Awolowo University with her professor parents. Her father was a history professor and her mother a criminology professor.

She attended University of Ibadan Staff Primary School and Federal Government Girls College (FGGC) Oyo. At age 14, she proceeded to Obafemi Awolowo University where she had her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Architecture. Olajumoke Adenowo is an alumna of Lagos Business School Chief Executive Programme, the Yale School of Management and the IESE Business School in Barcelona, Spain.

Olujumoke is happily married to Olukorede Adenowo and they are blessed with two sons, Toluwalase and Toluwaloju.

Early Career of Olajumoke Adenowo

The beautifully designed environs of the University of Ife where Olajumoke Adenowo grew up and her visit to Paris at a tender age was the genesis of her love for structures and architecture. She was always fascinated by structures and knew on time her career path.  After graduation, Olajumoke Adenowo started out as Assistant Architect at Towry Coker And Associates before moving to Femi Majekodunmi Associates where she designed the  Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja at the age of 23. This was a big achievement and opened doors to several opportunities for her.

Olajumoke Adenowo’s Entrepreneurial Journey

She started her own interior design and architectural firm, AD Consulting in 1994, and holds the position of a Principal Partner. Her company is known for bespoken, detailed designs and structures, designing every aspect of any building from inception to the fittings. As the principal partner of AD Consulting, she has designed and overseen the construction of over 70 projects including Nigerian government buildings, Coca-Cola, L’oreal and banks.

Olajumoke ran  an oil and gas firm, Advantage Energy and runs a property management firm, Advantage Property.

Boards Where Olajumoke Adenowo Serves

Olajumoke has served as Vice President of the Lagos Business School Chief Executive Programme, Chairperson of the National Tank Youth Development Committee. She serves on the board of British School of Lome, Fountain Holdings Ltd, Centre for Social Reformation and Leadway Tours & Travels Limited.

She is also a member of a number of professional bodies; Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Nigerian Institute of Architects, Interior Design Association of Nigeria, European Coaching Institute and International Mentoring Association.

Olajumoke is a fellow of African Leadership Network, Global Philanthropy Forum, the African Philanthropy Forum.

Achievements of Olajumoke Adenowo

  • Included in “Who will be who” in the 21st century by the International Biographical Centre in Cambridge, the UK in 1991.
  • Featured in the Hall of Fame, Black History Month by the University of West England, Bristol in 2013.
  • Celebrated on CNN African Voices, and was profiled as ‘Africa’s Starchitect’ in 2014.
  • Honored as an ‘Ambassador of Excellence’ for outstanding achievement in Architecture and Women’s Development by her Alma Mater.
  • Listed as One of the Africa’s Most Inspiring Business Woman by La Batisseurs des Economie De L’Afrique.

Philanthropy

Olajumoke’s passion for raising exceptional leaders led her into establishing a faith-based Non-Governmental Organisation, Awesome Treasures Foundation(ATF) in 1999. ATF’s aim is to identify and develop transformational leaders to positively help in achieving the Sustainable Developmental Goals (SDGs).

ATF organises various programmes; Camp Dawn, an educational camp to address the education gap in public schools, Awesome Princess to infuse the teenagers from slum with self-confidence, motivation, and courage to be the positive change in their communities. Other programmes include Business Incubator, Awesome Leading Ladies, Health Resources Group, and Appointment with Destiny. Thousands of women and youth have benefited from these initiatives.

Olajumoke Adenowo anchors a weekly radio broadcast on Classic FM, ‘Voice of Change’. She believes that our leaders should be held accountable for their actions and she uses ‘Voice Of Change’ to challenge youths to ask the right questions and hold their leaders accountable.
