We’ll talk about how to begin your side hustle and make sure you succeed in it. From getting your first idea to keeping things going strong, we’ll go through the important steps.

Whether you’re an artist wanting to earn from your talents or just someone wanting some extra cash, I’ll share tips to help you succeed.

Let’s find out how to make your side hustle not just a thing you do on the side, but something that really works and brings in some extra dough!

What is a Side Hustle?

A side hustle is where you work on a side business while you have a 9-to-5-day job. So, if you have a full-time job, and want to venture into entrepreneurship, this is probably how you are going to start your business.

I will never recommend that you use your paid hour at work to do your side hustle. No employer will like that and I assume you would not like that either if you were in their shoes. It could get you fired. I will relieve you of your position if I found you doing your own business on my company time.

What do I recommend? I recommend moonlighting.

What is Moonlighting

Moonlighting- where you get to do your side hustle after your work hours. This entails cutting back on social activities after the close of business and dedicating that free time to nurturing your side hustle.

It is perhaps the best way to start your own business with a day job as there is some stability of full-time income. This also allows you to experiment with minimal pressure as you ascertain if you want to be a business owner.

Is a Side Hustle a Solution for Dissatisfied Employees?

Sometimes, employees may be dissatisfied with their roles and may think that venturing out on their own is the solution. Occasionally, changing jobs does give that satisfaction sought.

Also, some companies give employees opportunities to be intrapreneurs within the organization. Here, such employees are conferred with the autonomy to create a product, oversee its launch, and own the product. For employees who seek self-accomplishment, this may work best as opposed to just starting their own business.

In addition, starting a side hustle gives you the ability to try out the different skills you have and see which ones pay.

Also, if your side hustle does not conflict with what the company you work for does, co-workers are a great source of jobs for your side hustle. For instance, if you work as a client service manager and you make dresses by the side, your co-workers can patronize you.

How To Make Your Side Hustle Work

The way to find success with a side hustle is to set aside time for your side hustle. Stick to a schedule to avoid burnout. You can say that you will work on your side hustle after the close of business on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Make sure you have relaxation time in between for balance. If you do not, you will always show up to your day job tired, exhausted and very unproductive. If this persists, you run the risk of losing your job for lack of productivity.

Little steps and effort ultimately culminate in big outcomes. Commit to putting in the work consistently and do not forget that you are testing your hypotheses. You want to establish the profitability of your side hustle and ascertain that it is worth all the work. Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Before You Quit Your Job For Your Side Hustle

Look at your goals again. Are you sure this is what you want to do? Are you sure of your why? Do you have enough saved up to get by on for a set period after you quit? I will help you answer all these questions in the Start Your Business in 30 Days Program.

I recommend having enough money saved up to cover your living expenses for at least two years just in case things do not pick up immediately.

Endeavour to leave your role on good terms with your boss and co-workers. I have seen too many people burning bridges and that is not a wise thing to do. You need that social capital.

Get Your Spouse on Your Side Before You Start Your Business

Do you have a spouse? Be on the same page with your spouse and family. You have to convince them to buy into your vision. If they do not support your vision, it is going to be difficult to achieve your goals.

I recently went to speak to a group of people who want to transition from paid employment into full entrepreneurship. One of the men in the group stood out. He was passionate about his idea and wanted to start a business, but his wife wasn’t buying into it. She preferred that he maintained his 9-to-5 job.

He once tried his hands at entrepreneurship and during the trying times, the pressure from his spouse made him quit and return to the 9-to-5. He wants to try a second time but his spouse has refused to agree to it. She prefers the salary stability that a 9-to-5 gives.

For this person, it will be challenging, because the person who should be the number one fan has not bought into that vision.

Sell Your Side Hustle Vision

It is your responsibility to sell your vision. You have to figure out a way to make your spouse buy into the vision. They may just be afraid and their fear could be founded.

That is why I mentioned that you have to ensure that you have the financial stability that can sustain your family for a period until the business picks up. Also, it helps to have a clear conversation with your family.

Communicate with them and let them know how important the vision is to you and assure them that there are plans in place to take care of the family while you figure this thing out. If you are married, the first person you should be getting on your side to be your number one supporter is your spouse.
