About UN Youth Champions Of The Earth 2020
The program is organised by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). This arm is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda. It also promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.
Basically, UNEP assesses global, regional and national environmental conditions and trends. Also, it develops international and national environmental instruments and strengthens institutions for the wise management of the environment.
In a way to fulfill its goals, UNEP has organised the Young Champions of the Earth 2020. This initiative aims to nurture the next generation of environmental leaders. As a result, it will give preference to applicants who demonstrate a strong willingness to learn. They will have access to mentoring and skill-building opportunities with like-minded entrepreneurs and experts.
How It Works
First, finalists will be shortlisted across every region from the applicants. Then, an overall of seven young people will be selected and named Young Champions of the Earth by the Global Jury. These seven Young Champions will be selected from each region: Africa, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, North America, West Asia and two from Asia and the Pacific.
These winners will implement their big idea. They will also update UNEP on their progress by presenting videos and blogs that will be shared on its website. Also, winners will receive funding to support their communication efforts all through the year. This way, they can produce high-quality materials so UNEP can share it to its audience.
Each of the seven Young Champions of the Earth will receive:
- US $15,000 in seed funding.
- US $9,000 to communicate and capture their idea, document and broadcast the stories of hope and change that they are catalyzing on the ground.
- Attend high-level UN meeting
- An introduction to dignitaries at the Champions of the Earth award ceremony
- Publicity and recognition through interviews and online and global media
- Access to a community of experts offering insights and mentoring
- Participation in an entrepreneurial training program.
Also, the 2020 Young Champions of the Earth are to share their journeys through videos and blogs on their website for a period of one year.
The selection process is in three rounds:
The open call for applications will run until 10 April 2020. Each applicant will be required to submit responses to a series of questions and upload a referee’s letter of endorsement.
Then, finalists will be shortlisted and drawn from every world region and requested to submit short videos pitching their big ideas.
In the final stage, a Global Jury will review the finalists’ big ideas and choose seven Young Champions of the Earth. The winners will be publicly announced and invited to attend the Champions of the Earth award ceremony.
The winners will be expected to implement their big ideas and act as ambassadors at speaking opportunities. They will also provide regular progress updates in the form of videos and blogs that will be shared on UNEP’s website.
In conclusion, if you have a bright vision for the future of the world’s planet, apply now and stand a chance to become one of the Young Champions of the Earth.
